I have been using a CSM560SL on my Rap 30 which I am really impressed with.

My query is gyro placement & how it affects the gyros performance. On the Rap 30 I mounted it behind the mainshaft as recommended in the Raptor manual as there is little room to mount it on the radio plate anyway.

I recently got myself a Rap 60 & decided to mount it on the radio plate instead of behind the mainshaft as I felt it would be better protected should it have an arrivial!!! Also a certain Mr Youngblood recommends this location on the Futura SE...Who am I to argue???

Anyway...The gyro didn't perform as well as expected MMM...gain was down in the 60% region & It lacked that really locked feeling.

I re-mounted it to behind the mainshaft as per Rap 60 manual & it really locks out beatifully again with the gain up in the mid 70%

The Rap 60's radio plate seems solid enough..is it the distance from the mainshaft thats important Confused ???

The gyro distance to the shaft is not important as its change of angle is the same. My Kobold gyro is 300mm from the shaft and works fine.

The most important bit is the vibrations or lack of them. If you have to turn down the gain of the gyro you are desensitising it to overcome the vibrations with the lesser control you are seeing. Always try to get the highest setting without inducing oscillations.

Where does TT say to mount the gyro on the Raptor 60?

Thanks for that Alex...TT recomend as with the Rap 30 to mount it on platform behind mainshaft. Surprise surprise my own findings agree that it does indeed appear to be optimal on both Rap30 & 60..Suppose you should actually follow the instructions from time to time!!!

For those interested.. To help maximise gyro gain on a Rap 30 fit a steadybar as per Rap60V2 at front of radio plate..There is a tendancy for the canopy nose to shake in Fast forward flight especially when its being buffeted in windy conditions or in violent manouvres.

For Raptor 30 owners something not mentioned in the manual (I think it is in the 60 manual) is to apply a small amount of 5 min epoxy between the inner race & the hub on the tail rotor hub to locate the bearings. The above 2 improvements allowed me to run with a least a 15% improvement in gain settings 90% no less!!! & thats using the full pitch slider travel!!!
