Just starting out...

I'm just starting out and was hoping for some wisdom. I've done quite a lot of on-line research now and was planning to gun for:

Sceadu Evo 50 with OS50 Hyper Engine
The JR PCM 9XII TX Only + Receiver (or Fut FF9??)
Helicommand 3D
3 x High torque servos
1 x High velocity servo (tail)
1 x Servo (throttle)

Is this a good selection; or
1) OTT;
2) The wrong choice for a beginner;
3) other..

I've done about 50hrs on latest version of the XTR Simulator with the Evo 50, in both still and relatively high wind settings (10-15mph) with thermals + buffeting enabled. I can fly it quite well (well at least tail-in anyway) and can now hover well, do tail-in circuits, do autos and flair land - I've learned the hard way that landing through the rotor-wash (with a very still wind) is not a good idea! I'm just getting to grips with flying side-on. However, nose-in I think will take some getting used to.

Is this (XTR practise) good preparation, or is the simulation practice making me too over confident? In other words, how realistic is the Sim practice vs. the real thing.

ps I have been flying a Mini Pred 3D (Elec), just new to Nitro.

if i was buying now id look at 2.4 ghz for future proofing not essential but cost wise prolly not much more.
the heli is a good one and will serve you well into 3d, you dont mention the servos but most makes have good ranges, dont get hung up eith needing digitals or the fastest servos there is.
Personally i wouldnt bother with the helicommand as it's expensive and you will probably find little use for it after you learn the basics, the sim is enough, id save the cash for crash spares as that's inevitable anyway.
The sim is great practice, for orientation and memory, still a .50 is more daunting than the sim at first but you will soon get past that, then it's simply do what you have learned.
If you have been flying a small electric you will be pleasantly surprised at how stable the nitro is....stick at reflex and get the evo...

There are other engine options more suited to learners. The OS50 Hyper Engine is a balls out high performance engine which is more expensive and drinks fuel twice as fast as an OS46 for example. Most of the learners I have seen get the Hyper first and burn it out hovering. Your choice is influenced by how much money you have and the bling factor show at the flying field.
