Hi all,

I'm just starting to look into RC Heli's, and need some advice as to
what I need to buy, where/when I can fly (do I have to fly solely at a club),
etc?

I'm considering something like a raptor 50 - cheaper than a 60 to repair
and run, but plenty of growing room which a 30 might not give me.

Ideally I'd like to get any worthwhile upgrades at the start, so I can fit
them whilst building it, rather than having to tear down at a later date..
Thoughts?

For a radio I was considering something like a FF9, although there do
appear to be a few variations of this, so any advice here would be good
too. I'm guessing a simulator and/or copilot system would be a good buy - any recommendations?

If anyone has a raptor 50 and/or a FF9 I'd be quite interested in meeting
up at some point to have a look and a chat - I'm based near Paisley but
can travel.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Waldo,

I'll see if I can get along on Sunday - Harthill is a bit of a trek from paisley.

Do you have any thoughts on my other questions?

I forgot engine, for which I'm thinking of an OS one - they seem to be
well regarded.

Ta.

I just fitted an OS50 Hyper Head to a new R50SE and it ran like a dream straight from the box.

I've experienced a Webra 52ARR in a friends R50 and its was nothing but trouble. He has since moved on to a OS50 Hyper as well

Did a bit of searching, and sounds like the .50 SX-H Ringed Hyper engine
is the one you're talking about. Some people mentioned having to modify
some of the R50 parts to allow the engine to fit, and there was mention
of having to remove a washer too - did you hit any of these problems?

Wrt The FF9, you can use PCM or PPM receivers. Any recommendations
for either (other than the lower price for PPM). I know that PCM can be
more fatal if someone fires up their tx on your channel.

Engine fitted without any mods, I'd heard that it may hit the cooling shroud, but it was a clearance fit.

Not sure what washer you're on about though.

I searched and found this:

Thats the very Webra 52 that I was refering to. We could never get it to run in the Heli without overheating. Willie now runs that Webra in his Tutor 40 Trainer plane:-)

Yep, I know the washer you're on about now, and yes I left that off the OS.

webra running hot, im sorry to hear your freind had nothing but trouble from his.

I run a Webra52ARR in my Sceadu Evo and it never once over heated
(i do have the cooling shroud extension on though)

Maybe the craptor is just too low-end piece of equipment to run such an upmarket engine and the engine spits its dummy out to be seen opearting within such trash.

Tongue firmly in cheek

Or maybe joking aside it is just possible that the design of the raptor is such that the engine IS unhappy to operate in that enviroment.

Webra out, OS in, easy fix.

Experienced nothing but tuning problems with Webras which have been well documented on other forums. Wouldn't touch another one.

Maybe just some people can get them (a Webra) to run and some cant.

Now dont get you knickers in a knot and think im having a pop we know how you touchy you are.

I think plug choice is important part of it and very carefull running in.

I run mine in on 10% nitro cool power for a gallon with very light loading then upto 15% coolpower which i still run and happy with its performance, but i only just hover about in the back garden and wouldnt call my flying in any way expert, but for what i do the motor runs perfect with me dunno why it just does.

Maybe the fact that i run a not very high nitro content and dont load the motor up to much has given it a nice gentle run in over a longer period has paid dividends for me.

Oh and although i am a "tinkerer" once i found a base setting for my engine i dont really change it much at all, i know there are some out there that strive for and chase a perfect mixture setting of their engine spending hours looking and fly land fiddle fly land fiddle and so it go's on, when in fact that perfect setting is dammed near impossible to get, get it close enough so the bugger stays alight and fly it is my school of thought.

Regards
